City Council

The City of Yucaipa operates under the council-manager form of government, in which an elected City Council serves as the City’s legislative body and appoints a City Manager to perform the executive function. This system of local government combines the strong political leadership of elected officials with the professional managerial experience of an appointed City Manager. Over 90% of California’s 482 municipalities operate under the council-manager form of government.

The five members of the City Council, serving collectively as the legislative, policy-making branch of City government, are elected by district to serve staggered four-year terms. Every even-numbered year, either two or three members of the City Council stand for election.

Yucaipa’s Mayor is selected annually from among the City Council Members by a majority vote of the Council, and is charged with running the City Council meetings and representing the City throughout the community and region. The Mayor and each member of the City Council share equal voting powers on all items coming before the Council.

The City Council also serves as the Board of Directors of the Successor Agency to the Yucaipa Redevelopment Agency and as Commissioners of the Yucaipa Housing Authority.
